May 30, 2025, commemorates the 44th anniversary of the martyrdom of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, a significant personality in the political and military narrative of Bangladesh. Transitioning from soldier to statesman, Ziaur Rahman's existence was characterized by sacrifice, strategic leadership, and an unwavering commitment to national development and sovereignty.

Early Life and Military Career

Ziaur Rahman was born on January 19, 1936, in Bagbari, Bogura, and he was commissioned into the Pakistan Army in 1953. Throughout his career, he established himself as an exceptional military officer. He was among the first Bengali officers to ascend the ranks and subsequently emerged as a significant figure during the Liberation War of 1971.

Role in the Liberation War of 1971



Ziaur Rahman's most iconic moment occurred on March 27, 1971, when he proclaimed the independence of Bangladesh from Kalurghat, Chittagong, representing Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This declaration was transmitted via radio and provided significant impetus to the resistance against the Pakistani military.

In his capacity as the Commander of Sector 1 of the Mukti Bahini (Liberation Army), he took charge on the front lines, meticulously planning and executing operations with exceptional strategic insight. His valor was recognized with the Bir Uttom, which is Bangladesh’s second-highest award for gallantry.

Post-Independence Contributions and Rise to Power

Following the attainment of independence, Zia re-entered military service and swiftly advanced to the position of Chief of Army Staff. In the wake of political instability and a succession of coups, Ziaur Rahman took on the presidency in 1977.

On May 30, 1981, Ziaur Rahman was killed in Chittagong amidst an unsuccessful military coup. His assassination stunned the country and created a political void. He was interred in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, where annually, thousands come to honor him on the anniversary of his martyrdom.
